Veterans deserve an apology from Murphy

In 2020, New Jersey lost 119 veterans to COVID-19 due to gross negligence and mismanagement of its government-run veteran homes. This happened on Gov. Phil Murphy’s watch, but his only response has been to blame it on care providers and throw money at the victims’ families.

Governor Murphy talks a big game about maintaining health and safety, but the facts show just how disastrous his handling of the pandemic was for veterans.

The New York Times reported how veterans in these homes were left unprotected. The offenses included not requiring staff to wear masks or gloves, not providing frequent COVID testing, and allowing employees to continue working after testing positive. To top it off, employees were caught taking out bonuses for themselves and hiding COVID-19 numbers from family members. That’s not following science; that’s following former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In return for their deadly errors, Governor Murphy and the state have agreed to pay a $53 million settlement to the deceased veterans’ families, but with a double catch: the state is not admitting to guilt for these deaths, and the families are required to use part of the settlement funds to refund hospital costs that Medicare paid for.

What we have here is a Democrat leadership that has no respect for the service that these men and women gave to our country. In fact, the Wall Street Journal reported that the higher-ups at the veterans homes who took the fall were left on the payroll and allowed to retire in January 2021.

We should be outraged by this tragedy Governor Murphy enabled but all we hear from the liberal media is silence. While some publications like The Wall Street Journal did report on this fiasco, none of them accredited any fault to Governor Murphy. What’s more, they sang his praises through election day and he was rewarded with a second term.
